The European Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) was established in the United Nations in 1947. It is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations and currently has 56 members, mainly from the European continent. Apart from Europe, several countries from Canada, USA, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and West Asia are members of the European Economic Commission.

The main objective of the European Economic Commission (ECE) is to achieve economic integration among European countries. In addition, it tries to solve the economic problems of the member countries, to collect statistical data, to exchange technical information among the members, to work on environment and transportation, and to establish a management understanding that facilitates the production and trade of vehicles.

Criteria known as ECE safety standards have been established through the efforts of the European Economic Commission. These standards are intended to ensure vehicle safety in the European Union.
