The Environmental Management System can be applied in all organizations and businesses. It is completely voluntary. The purpose of this system is to improve the environmental performance of the organization.

Environmental management and the necessary measures to be taken by different organizations in different countries have started to work at 1990. The first published standard on environmental management is the British BS 1992 standard published in 7750. International Standards Organization (ISO), environmental management system standards. ISO 14001 Environmental Management System The decisions and principles taken at the world environmental summit in Rio in 1992 were also effective. In the year following the summit, representatives of nearly fifty different countries under the leadership of ISO established a technical committee and began to prepare international environmental management standards.

The latest update of this standard was made in 2005.
